Things to do in the beautiful Garden Route

Over the holidays I came to realize just how lucky we are to live in George, we are based in the heart of the stunning Garden Route and there is so much outdoor fun to be had here! We did not go away for our December holidays but we had family visiting and we had a ball.

Here is my list of fun things to do in and around the George area.

Outeniqua train rides

Red Berry Farm

An old time favorite is visiting the Red Berry Strawberry farm in George, other than the obvious picking strawberries, they also have loads for the kids to do. They have a maze that is the largest hedge maze in the Southern Hemisphere, mini train rides for the kids, pony rides and a large outdoor play area. Adults can enjoy a very yummy lunch over a bottle of wine, or have coffee and scones with cream and strawberries and then have fun picking strawberries. It really is fun for the whole family.

Outenique Transport Museum & Power van rides

Visit the Outeniqua transport museum in George and view the large display of old trains and cars with lots of interesting info to be learnt. The kids enjoy climbing onto the trains to have their photo taken, my daughter particularly loved the fire truck on display. You can also go on a train ride with the power van, it takes a very very beautiful scenic route up the Outeniqua mountains and stops at the top for everyone to enjoy a pic-nic and take in the view before heading down again. This really is the most stunning experience of our beautiful mountain and spectacular views of the George area. The little power van seats only 12 people and is a thrilling experience to ride in.

Pepsi pools

Pepsi Pools trail walk & swimming spot

This is a hidden gem on the foot of the Outiniqua mountains, a walk starting at the George NMMU campus through the pine plantation and follow the signs to the Pepsi pools swimming spot. There is a beautiful little water fall with “pepsi” colored water that is refreshing to take a swim in and if you are feeling brave you can even climb the rock and jump off the waterfall into the pools below. There are also a few other walking trails you can follow.

Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudtshoorn

While you are in the area you can pop over the beautiful Outeniqua mountain pass and take a trip to Oudtshoorn to visit the Cango Wildlife Ranch. The wildlife ranch has over 90 different species of animals and with guided tours it makes for a very interesting outing for the whole family. Children will be thrilled at the beautiful birds and fish and be impressed with the crocodiles and lions. The ranch also has a wonderful restaurant where you can relax and enjoy a meal after your tour of the animals.

Visit Wilderness

The next stop from George is a lovely little town called Wilderness, it has a stunning long beach to take walks on or you can go fishing by the Kaaimas river. Wilderness village has many interesting and unique restaurants and pubs to enjoy as well as a Friday night market.

Ebb and Flow Wilderness

Ebb and Flow is a stunning camping spot situated just outside wilderness, you can camp or rent a rondavel for the evening. You can also just visit for the day and have a braai under a tree and take in the peacefulness of nature by the river.

 Forest Valley Cottages

One of the most magical, relaxing places we have spent a night is at Forest Valley cottages in Rheenendal Knysna. This makes for the perfect romantic getaway for a couple or even take the kids along for a good dose of relaxing nature. Relax in a Jacuzzi bath and sip on some champagne while taking in the amazing view of the forest below.

Die Vette Mossel in Grootbrak

Die Vette Mossel in Grootbrak is an amazing food experience. Situated right on the beach and in the sea sand it offers a 6 course set menu of seafood that will be difficult for anyone to finish if you do not pace yourself. Take your favorite bottle of wine along and your own glasses because this rustic outdoor restaurant does not provide cutlery or glasses. Food is served buffet style and is eat as much as you can through out all courses.

I asked about Ebb & Flow before even looking at your blog post! I didn’t realise you too lived in Paradise as we call it! We love living here, and for the adrenalin junkie there is so much to do. Having a guesthouse in Hoekwil loads of our guests use us as a base to either go to Tsitsikamma to do the Canopy Tour or Bloukraans to Bungee, Plettenergy Bay / Mosses Bay to do SharkCave diving and then of course Oudtshoorn for a Cango Cave experience and then of course the Power Van and Railway Museum for steam train enthusiasts. … real pity that the Outeniqua Choo-Choo no longer runs …. but who knows, just maybe! Have an awesome day, loving the rain.

Lovely post. I agree – as a fellow Garden Router, I also love these outings. xxx
